Overview
It's a big year for the Volkswagen Passat, which has been redesigned for 2020. It's back with all-new, sleek exterior styling that's sure to turn heads. The interior has also been refreshed, yet it still has the feel of a classic Passat cabin. This German midsized sedan now also includes a generous amount of standard technology and safety features that were previously only available on higher trims, making it the most feature-laden Passat ever. The 2020 VW Passat's base-engine remains largely unchanged, but some minor tweaks have brought an increase in torque. Mechanical Features
All 2020 VW Passats are have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with intercooler and direct fuel injection that makes 174 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque - an increase of 23 lb.-ft. over the 2019 Passat. This engine is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sport modes. It also has independent front MacPherson struts and an independent rear 4-link suspension.. It also gets respectable fuel economy, getting an EPA-estimated 23 mpg around town and 34 mpg on the open road.
Trim Levels
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is available in four trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, and SEL. The S trim is far from a bare-bones entry model, though, as it comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, heated side mirrors, VW App-Connect, Bluetooth audio streaming, a rearview camera, and SiriusXM All Access with a 3-month trial subscription. The SE adds rain-sensing windshield wipers, V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces, an 8-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless access with push-button start, and remote start. Next, the R-Line gets standard 19-inch alloy wheels, a power-tilting/sliding sunroof, and exclusive R-Line front bumper and badging. The loaded SEL trim tacks on a hands-free easy open trunk, a premium color multifunction display, genuine leather seating surfaces, and a Fender premium audio system.
Technology and Safety Features
Volkswagen engineered the 2020 Passat with a heavy emphasis on the safety of its occupants. The car's passive safety features include a crash-optimized front end and an advanced airbag system with head-protecting side curtain airbags in the front and rear. All trim levels come standard with advanced safety features that are not included on some base model competitor vehicles. The S gets forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, a blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and pedestrian monitoring.
